Historical Highlights

  • The first spade full of dirt was turned on January 8, 1909, for a 30x50 foot wooden building that was to become St. Michael of Cheney Station.
  • The First Mass was held on May 23, 1909. Monies to help build the church came from the Catholic Church Extension Society who approved a grant of $500.00 for a church in Cheney, Nebraska.
  • On September 29,1972, the parish built a social hall across the street. Then 13 years later, August 24, 1985, the dedication of the addition that was the church was held. In February 1986, the old church was used for a controlled burn by the Bennett and Southeast rural Fire Districts.
  • For 90 years the church was a mission parish. The first rectory was started April 30, 2000, by Msgr James Dawson.
  • St. Michael celebrated its Centennial with a Mass at the original site in Cheney on May 23, 2009.
  • In December 2006, land was purchased south of Yankee Hill Road, between 70th and 84th street to build the first St. Michael Catholic School. That school opened September 2011 with grades Kindergarten thru 6th grade.
  • A lower level build-out to the school opened in August 2022, providing several additional classrooms.  
  • The church was completed and dedicated on April 23, 2023
